April in The Dalles: Cycling, Cherries, and Carnivals

04/09/2019 | Biking, Event, Food, Road Trip, The Dalles

April is an exciting time in The Dalles. Wildflowers start bursting through the earth and the city comes alive with some of our favorite regional festivals.

This year marks the 40th Annual Northwest Cherry Festival, running April 26th – 28th in downtown The Dalles. This year’s theme is “Follow the Cherry Brick Road,” and The Dalles will be the Emerald City. Costumes are encouraged! Imagine the whole family dressed in Wizard of Oz attire. Check in at The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce early in the week to enjoy a pre-sale discount on carnival tickets.

Follow the Cherry Trail to discover restaurants with Cherry Festival Themed specials. Stop by Freebridge Brewing for a Cherry City Pizza, or Last Stop Saloon for a Cherry Drop-it Martini. Or if you’re in the mood for something delightfully sweet try “The Dorothy,” a Cherry Almond Cake with a “Wizard’s Brew” aka a Cherry Lime Ricki Tea from Sweetheart Bakeshop. The Carnival opens at 2:00 pm and the Cherry Marketplace will open at 4:00 pm.

Enjoy a $6 Cherry Festival Royalty Coronation Breakfast Sponsored by Cherry Heights Living at the Mid-Columbia Senior Center. Or get your morning exercise by participating in the Northwest Cherry Festival Run/Walk. Make sure to head downtown around 10:00 am to watch as the Tonkin Subaru Northwest Cherry Festival Parade follows the Cherry Brick Road around downtown The Dalles.

Before heading home the next day, take the morning to enjoy Kainos Coffee local coffee and a Cherry and Chocolate Scone or Cherry Pop Tart, or take the family to Beachwood Eatery’s brunch buffet complete with cherry crumble. Northwest Cherry Festival is a family event jam-packed with fun, so plan your visit today!

But the Northwest Cherry Festival isn’t the only fun event planned this month. Start April off right by getting your cycling fix at the 15th Annual Cherry of a Ride! Or work on your putting and enjoy the spring air at The 2nd Annual Cherry Fling Disc Golf Competition at Sorosis Park on April 20th.
