Your gateway to stress-free family fun: Why The Dalles is a vacation planner's paradise

Do you have a love-hate relationship with trip planning? Does the thought of planning a getaway inspire equal amounts of excitement and dread? You get excited about the amazing things you’ll get to do and see, but you feel overwhelmed planning all of the details and devising back-up plans (and more back-up plans) when the first (and second) options inevitably go awry.

The Dalles is your trip-planning salvation. Located on the shores of the Columbia River, The Dalles is the eastern gateway to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, and paddling to your heart’s content. Explore our rich history at one of our many impressive museums or get a taste of the region at a fruit farm, brewery, or winery. The Dalles is full of flavor and hosts the East Gorge Food Trail.

The Dalles bike trail

Whether you're on two legs, two wheels (or using another transportation option), The Dalles Riverfront Trail is not to be missed.

Take a walk on the water on The Dalles Riverfront Trail. Keep your eyes peeled for osprey, deer, blue heron, beaver and many more. Take out your paddle board and explore the waterways of the Columbia River. While visiting, enjoy a guided fishing experience and see what you can catch in our world class fishery. If you are a cyclist, The Dalles area offers many different courses for every skill level. If golf is your game, then head over to The Dalles Country Club and enjoy nine holes of golf in a picturesque setting. The adventures are endless!

If outdoor adventures aren’t for you, don’t sweat it - we have you covered! Visit the oldest bookstore in Oregon, Klindt’s Booksellers - in business since 1870! If you’re a history buff, explore one of many local museums and landmarks like Old Saint Peter’s Landmark, the National Neon Sign Museum, Fort Dalles Museum, Original Wasco County Courthouse, or the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum. For the wine enthusiast, visit Sunshine Mill and take in a drive-in movie. If you’re looking for a waterfront tasting experience, give Tierra De Lobos Winery a try. If it’s a mouthwatering food experience with a view you’re after, then Bargeway Pub has you covered. Enjoy amazing food, live music, and a spectacular Columbia River waterfront view! For brews created in The Dalles, check out Freebridge Brewing and Sedition Brewing Company in the historic downtown.

Sedition Brewing Co

Nestled in the fabric of The Dalles' historic downtown, Sedition Brewing Co. is a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

The Dalles area is also home to a vibrant art community. The Dalles Art Center offers outstanding works created by local artists with rotating exhibits.
